2 1/2 to 5 years

In the Preschool rooms the children are encouraged to:  work through their problems by using their words to express what they are feeling in an appropriate manner, develop their self-help skills (serving themselves, getting ready for outdoor play, etc.), cooperate with their peers (sharing toys, helping each other), and respect for each other and the environment.  We also work on printing and reading readiness skills (letter recognition, numbers, shapes, colours, etc.).

Outside of each room you will find:

Programme Plans – these list the various types of activities that are available to your child on a weekly basis, as well as, a skill that each child is working on.

Monthly Calendar – gives an overview of themes, trips, special activities (such as baking, Show and Tell, etc.), birthday celebrations, messages and reminders.  A copy will be sent home at the beginning of each month.

Room Schedule – outlines the daily routines (outdoor play-the children are outside for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon.  The children are encouraged to dress themselves and the staff assist with zippers, buttons, scarves, etc, circle, snack, lunch, programmed play, rest, washroom, free play, etc.)

Menus – “This Week” and “Next Week” menus are posted for morning, lunch and afternoon snack.

Snack and lunch provides a social time for the children and staff.  The children serve themselves, including pouring their own drinks, and tidying up their own dishes when they have finished. Morning snack begins at approximately 8:30 a.m.  Lunch begins at approximately 11:30 a.m.  Afternoon snack is less structured.  Snack is available on the table and the children can go help themselves while playroom is continuing.

We feel that communication between the parents and staff is very important.  If there is anything regarding your child that you would like us to know (had a bad night, woke up early, has a cough, someone different will be picking him/her up, etc.) please speak to us.  We will also write notes, reminders, etc. to you and tape them to your child’s cubby.  Annually, we have parent-teacher meetings and a portfolio for your child is reviewed monthly.
